Special Drive Results in Record Number of Drunken Driving Violations

A rigorous special drive against drunken driving conducted from May 31st to June 2nd, 2024, between 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM has yielded significant results in Panaji, Goa. According to reports from the Superintendent of Police, Traffic, Rahul Gupta, IPS, a total of 249 violations of drunken driving were booked during this intensified enforcement period. This marks the highest figure of drunken driving cases booked within a three-day period.

In total, 258 drunken driving violations were recorded from May 31st to June 2nd, 2024. This crackdown on drunken driving is part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety in the region. Notably, from January 1st to June 2nd, 2024, a staggering 2124 drunken driving cases have been booked, representing a significant increase compared to the 509 cases recorded during the same period last year.

The legal consequences for such violations are severe. As per section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, individuals caught driving with alcohol exceeding 30 mg per 100 ml of blood or under the influence of drugs face imprisonment for up to six months, a fine of Rs. 10,000, or both for the first offense. Subsequent offenses carry even harsher penalties, including imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of Rs. 15,000, or both.

The dangers of driving under the influence cannot be overstated. Even small amounts of alcohol in the bloodstream can impair crucial driving skills such as concentration, judgment, and reaction time, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Superintendent Rahul Gupta urges the general public to refrain from drinking and driving, emphasizing the importance of making Goan roads safer for all users.
