PONDA: A special committee was formed to tackle the issue of age-old trees leaning on houses, power wires, and roadside during the Ponda Taluka Disaster Management meeting held on Friday at Rajiv Kala Mandir.
Local sarpanchas pointed out how people are suffering after collapse of trees causing major losses to the tune of lakhs during the recent Tauktae cyclone. The sarpanchas also pointed out how the landlords, mundkars or the owners of trees objected in cutting the trees.
The meeting was chaired by Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude. Ponda MLA Ravi Naik, Deputy Collector Pradeep Naik, PMC Chairperson Shantaram Colvekar, sarpanchas of various panchayats and officials of PWD, Electricity, Water Supply, Forest were among those present.
Ravi Naik asked why the age- old trees which collapsed during the rain and cyclone were not trimmed beforehand.
Minister Gaude said the government officials, including NH officials, should be active in cutting the dangerous trees that could take lives if they are not trimmed before felling.
He also appealed the landlords, mundkars and owners of trees to allow cutting the dangerous trees leaning on houses or roads so that valuable life and property could be saved.
