Speeding car crashes into coconut tree at Guirim; driver dead

Victim identified as Adv Joao Patricio D'Souza, a 78-year-old resident of Pilerne, Bardez

PANJIM: The toll of fatal accidents continues to rise on Goan roads, claiming yet another life in a distressing incident at Guirim on Wednesday afternoon. 

Police revealed that Adv Joao Patricio D’Souza, a 78-year-old resident of Pilerne, Bardez lost his life when his car accidentally crashed into a coconut tree positioned within the road divider.

Witnesses to the incident recounted the harrowing scene. “He was proceeding from Porvorim to Mapusa, lost control and rammed into a coconut tree. We saw him speeding from the signal and coming in full speed; it’s uncertain what could have happened,” expressed a bystander.

The impact of the accident was such that the coconut tree fell down after being hit by the car. Efforts from bystanders were quick as they intervened to free the injured driver from the wreckage, forcibly opening the car door to extract him from within the vehicle. Despite their efforts, the driver suffered severe head injuries due to the impact. He was rushed to the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Bambolim, where, he succumbed to his injuries.

Head constable Pritam Dabholkar of Porvorim police later conducted the panchanama and further investigation is in progress with PSI Sitaram Malik under the guidance of Porvorim PI Rahul Parab.
