PANJIM: Goa Sponge and Power Ltd (GSPL) has approached the Union Ministry for Environment and Forest (MoEF) seeking clearance for the proposed capacity enhancement of its existing manufacturing unit for sponge iron, steel at Sanguem. The existing plant for sponge iron operates on coal based DRI technology.
The project was initiated in 2016, wherein sponge iron manufacturing was capped at 90,000 tonnes per annum (TPA).
As per the proposal, the targeted production capacity of the sponge iron is 1,25,000 TPA, 425 TPD MS billets, captive power plant 12.5 MW and new direct charging hot rolling mill 425 TPD. The proposal is currently pending before the Expert Appraisal Committee of MoEF.
Ore for the plant would be imported from South Africa. In case of non-availability of iron ore, pellets will be procured from Karnataka.
Raw material will be transported through road.
GSPL has a power generation capacity of 12 MW of which 10 MW is consumed in house for steel making and sponge iron unit and the balance power of 1 -2 MW is exported to Goa Electricity Grid.
