PANJIM: Right wing group — the Sriram Sene — that gained notoriety after its members ruthlessly attacked women in Mangalore and expressed their audacious desire to attack couples on Valentines’ Day is all set to open a branch in Goa in January or February.
Addressing a press conference Wednesday, office bearers said that they would start a branch in the state – it could even be in the capital – and had also sent a copy of the Bhagavad Gita to editor in chief of Tehelka Tarun Tejpal who is accused of sexually assaulting a colleague.
Calling Tejpal’s act as inappropriate behaviour with a woman as young as his daughter, the Sene said that “Western culture makes a person immoral and characterless, and on the other hand Hindu culture makes an individual virtuous and of sterling character.”
The right wing group was the reason for the Pink Chaddi Campaign, a non-violent protest launched in February 2009 after a group of women were attacked in a pub in Mangalore. The campaign was a brainchild of an employee of Tehelka and it was conceived to protest against a threat by Pramod Muthalik of Sriram Sene which had threatened to marry off and take other action on any young couples found together on Valentine’s Day.
