PANJIM: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has imposed fine of Rs 25,000 on St Cruz panchayat for failing to comply with directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) with regards to burning of waste in public.
The Board has written to the North Collector to levy and recover fine amounting to Rs 25,000 from the panchayat for being defaulter in complying with the directions of the NGT.
Following a complaint from social activist Arturo D’Souza, the Board inspected the village last year, with regards to burning of garbage and plastic materials in public, and subsequently, it had sought clarification from the panchayat about the incident.
However, till date, no reply has been received from the panchayat and accordingly, the action be initiated, the letter signed by Environmental Engineer Sanjeev Joglekar, last month, reads.
As per the NGT order, burning of waste in public or open spaces is prohibited and the GSPCB and district collectors are the concerned designated authorities for initiating action against the violators.
