PANJIM: The State Government made representation to the Centre demanding Schedule Tribe (ST) status to the Dhangar community on Monday.
A delegation led by Union Minister for Ayush Shripad Naik submitted a memorandum to Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram demanding ST status to the Dhangar community.
The delegation included Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Tendulkar, Lok Sabha MP Narendra Sawaikar, Goa Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavalekar and others.
Kavalekar has been pressing for grant of ST status to Dhangar community for last many years.
Last year in July, Kavalekar had urged President of India Ram Nath Kovind to intervene and ensure an amendment to the related Act to include Goa’s Dhangar-Gouly community in the ST category.
When contacted, Kavalekar said that Union Minister has assured to examine the proposal and do everything possible to grant necessary protection to the community.
