The 189 staff managing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme in Goa have been working on contract since the time, the scheme was launched in 2008. They are not paid salary as per any specified scale. In South Goa the scheme is looked after by four project officers, four assistant engineers, six accountants and 94 Gram Rojgar Sahayaks and all of them are on contract and they manage the 88 villages in seven talukas. The staff disclosed that every time they are assured by the authorities including the minister that their services would be regularised. Not only are they working on contract, which is renewed every year, but even the salary paid to them is meager compared to the government servant wages. The project officers are paid Rs 22,000 per month, Assistant Engineers Rs 20,000, accountants Rs 16,000 and Gram Rojgar Sahayaks Rs 13,000 per month. The staff manages the talukas of Ponda, Dharbandora, Sanguem, Quepem, Salcete, Mormugao and Canacona.
