MARGAO: The stage is set for a grand Carnival float parade in the commercial capital on Sunday, even as the Carnival festivities kicked off in the city with a host of entertainment programs at the SPGDA grounds on Saturday.
The Civic body has erected huge welcome boards at the four entry points to the city, welcoming carnival revelers for the three-day festivities of fun and frolic.
Even as the Margao Carnival 2013 committee headed by Councilor Gonzaco Rebello was giving final touches for the mega float parade scheduled in the city, the civic body staged the traditional Carnival khell tiatrs on Saturday, beginning from Pajifond ward represented by Councilor Raju Naik.
Gonzaco along with other city fathers were huddled together in the chamber of MMC Chairperson Arthur D’Silva on Saturday morning.
Arthur told newsmen that besides elaborate traffic arrangements, the civic body has asked the police to deploy adequate security personnel for security of people thronging the city to witness the celebration. “We have asked the police to ensure full-proof security and be tough with anti-socials. We anticipate a huge turn out of Xaxtikars for the float parade,” D’Silva said.
Meanwhile, the traffic department has proposed diversion of traffic in Margao city on Sunday in view of the Carnival parade. Traffic coming from KTC bus stand to enter the city will be diverted via old market circle, swimming pool, Borda, eastern bypass, Aquem.
Similarly, traffic coming from Borda will be diverted near Eurico Silva house towards the swimming pool circle side.
DySP Guruprasad Mhapne said traffic coming from Navelim/railway over bridge to Margao city will be diverted behind MMC building and will proceed via tourist hostel, Woodland Hotel to Gomant Vidya Niketan/Abade Faria road to go out of the city.
