PORVORIM: Stating that unwarranted protest by NGOs against slaughter of animals has resulted into closer of State’s lone abattoir, Minister for Animal Husbandry Mauvin Godinho on Friday said that it is a wrong perception that BJP-led government in the State is against the beef eaters.
Godinho was responding to a Zero Hour mention by BJP legislator Glenn Ticlo who sought to know why Goa Meat Complex (GMC) has been rendered non functional.
Minister said ‘just because a BJP led government is ruling in Goa, a false propaganda has been made that we are against the meat eaters and that is why we are not allowing the GMC to function’.
“That is totally false. The functioning of GMC came to half in October 2017 when animals were not allowed to be brought for slaughtering by a NGO,” he said.
“Some NGO run by lady created the problem. This NGO is not even from Goa,” Godinho added.
“We will put the Goa Meat Complex into operation from August 22, which is Bakri Eid, provided we get animals to slaughter,” the minister said adding that all the statutory permissions for the same would be in place before that.
Godinho stated that at present the beef has been sourced from neighbouring Belgaum district.
Godinho informed the House that by the time all the problems with the traders were being sorted out, the permissions from agencies like FSSAI, Goa State Pollution Control Board and State Factories and Boilers Department had expired.
