PANJIM: As part of celebrations of 50 years of India’s triumph over Pakistan in 1971 war, Goa on Tuesday celebrated the ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’ as the Victory Flame was brought to Azad Maidan in the capital city after touring several States. The Victory Flame arrived in Goa last Thursday.

To remember India’s victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’ by lighting the Vijay Mashaal on December 16, last year and since then, the victory flame is travelling the length and breadth of the country.

Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant attended the commemorative event organised by the Indian Army’s 2 Signal Training Centre as a part of nationwide effort to recognise those who participated in the war.

The 1971 Indo-Pak war veterans were felicitated at the event. “It was a thorough planning, mooted by our military higher ups and executed by the disciplined forces. Our target was achieved…cent percent achievement in war,” the Governor said addressing the gathering.

In December 1971, the Indian Armed Forces had secured victory over the Pakistan Army, and a new nation ‘Bangladesh’ was created. The victory resulted into the largest military surrender post World War-II wherein approximately 93,000 soldiers of the Pakistan Army surrendered to the Indian Army. It was one of the fastest and shortest campaigns of military history.
