State declares three days of mourning

PANJIM: Goa government on Sunday declared three days of State mourning after Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar passed away at 92 on the same morning after losing a post-COVID-19 complications battle at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. 

As a gesture of paying respect, the national flag will be flown at half-mast for three days. Taking to Twitter, the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant expressed his grief on the Legendary Singer’s demise. He wrote, “Anguished by the demise of the nightingale of India, Bharat Ratna @mangeshkarlata ji. May God bestow Sadgati to this great soul. My condolence is with the Mangeshkar family.”

Governor of Goa P S Sreedharan Pillai also expressed deep sorrow over the passing away of legendary singer. In his condolence message, the Governor said that the divine and melodious voice of “India’s Nightingale” is irreplaceable. He said, the memories of Lata Mangeshkar’s mesmerizing voice will always remain deeply etched in the hearts of the people of India.

“I convey my heartfelt condolences to the family members and prayed for her soul to rest in peace,” the Governor added.

Dr Sawant along with Goa BJP election in-charge and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP State President Sadanand Shet Tanavade rushed to Mumbai to pay last respect to the legendary singer. 

A press statement issued by the BJP, before the final rites at Shivaji Park, Mumbai, stated that the three leaders “will pay homage to Lata Didi on behalf of Goans. They will be present on her final journey at Shivaji Park.”

The BJP postponed the launch of its Lok Kalyan Sankalp Patra for the upcoming Assembly elections in Goa in view of the demise of Goan-origin singer earlier in the day. In a statement, Tanavade said, “As we all grieve the demise of Legendary Singer Lata Didi Mangeshkar, the BJP has decided to cancel all its programs scheduled for the day, today.” 

He said the virtual rally ‘Jan Sankalp Sabha’ which was to be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 5.30 pm also stood cancelled, adding the Goa BJP will announce the new schedule later. The virtual rally was scheduled across 20 constituencies in the North Goa where the party leaders, karyakartas and the people were supposed to attend. 

The BJP and the Congress also paid homage to the singer at their respective offices.
