PANJIM: With Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa issuing a heavy rainfall warning for the State for five days from Sunday, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has directed the State administration to be on high alert.
With the likely formation of a low-pressure area over North & adjoining Central Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours, monsoon activity is likely to get strengthened over South Konkan and Goa in the coming days.
IMD Goa observatory has predicted very heavy rainfall, exceeding 11.5cm in 24 hours is expected across the State from Sunday till September 7.
In a statement issued, Sawant said that in view of the warning issued by IMD, regarding heavy rainfall in the State over the next 48 hours, he has directed the State administration to be on high alert.
The administration has been asked to immediately spring into action in taking all precautionary measures and prepare for the oncoming showers.
The authorities have asked all people to be on alert and contact local authorities in case of any emergencies.
Meanwhile, IMD has said that intense spells of short duration are very likely over the State during this period. Winds of speed around 40kmph likely along with rainfall spells.
With increased rainfall activity to continue, IMD has said that the areas vulnerable for landslide and flooding may be kept under monitoring.
“Water levels in rivers and reservoirs may be monitored and necessary precautions may kindly be taken,” IMD said.
