State orders 1,045 metric tonnes of onions for ration card holders at subsidised rate

PANJIM: The State government is gearing up to stock bulk onions, which would be provided at subsidised rates to ration card holders across all fair price shops. The State has ordered 1,045 metric tonnes of onions from National Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Federation in Nashik (Maharashtra).

“We are importing 1,045 metric tonnes of Onions from the agency in Nashik to make it available for 3.5 lakh ration card holders in Goa, at a subsidised rate. Each of the 3.5 lakh ration card holder would be provided 3 kg of onions by holding a special drive across all the fair price shops,” Director of Civil Supplies Siddhivinayak Naik said. The department, he explained, is making all attempts to get the commodity at the earliest.

Media advertisements, SMSes and other social media forums would be roped-in to create awareness about the subsidised sale of onions at the fair price shops.

The women’s wing of the BJP Goa unit has hailed government’s decision to provide relief to families across Goa. “It’s a major relief to all families (ration card holders) and particularly women in the State,” the wing’s president Sheetal Naik said at a press conference on Saturday. The wing also welcomed government’s decision to do away with income and life certificate for DSS and Griha Aadhar beneficiaries this year.
