PANJIM: As the industries reel under daily load shedding and power shortage, the Minister for Industries Mauvin Godinho has recommended that Goa government should approach Centre for increase in power allocation from Central sector to meet the growing State demand.
The industry bodies had written to the State government raising concerns about the ‘acute power shortage’ in the coastal State, which has resulted in load shedding and affected operations. As they agreed to bear the cost of additional power, the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has given approval for purchase of 120MW of power from open market.
Speaking on the issue, Industries Minister Godinho said that State needs to approach the Centre with a demand to increase the allocation of power from their grid. “With more industries…more consumers, power demand is increasing and it will continue to increase. Centre will definitely consider our demand positively,” he said.
As per Electricity Department data, the peak demand of Goa is around 690 MW. The State is currently receiving 418 MW of power from the Western Region (WR) and 100 MW from the Southern Region (SR). The total firm allocation of power from central sector is approx 518 MW.
Meanwhile, speaking further, Godinho said that government is in process of preparing a road map with proper directions to ensure that the State becomes a preferred destination for industries.
