State to be garbage free once all treatment plants are built, commissioned: Babush

PANJIM: Waste Management Minister Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate on Thursday said that Goa will be garbage free once all the state-of-the-art garbage treatment plants are built and commissioned.

Monserrate said that the second state-of-the art garbage treatment plant at Cacora-Curchorem will be inaugurated on May 30, on the Statehood Day while the tendering process is on for the proposed garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim, Old Goa and will be built within the stipulated time.

He said that garbage menace concerning the State will be solved once all the state-of-the-art garbage treatment plants are built and commissioned.

When asked how many years it will take to make Goa garbage free, Monserrate said that it will be his endeavour to see that Goa becomes garbage free before his tenure ends.

He said that the trial run of the garbage treatment plant at Cacora will be conducted on May 10, before it is formally inaugurated on May 30. “I will be visiting Cacora for inspection of the new garbage treatment plant on May 11,” he said.

According to the Minister, garbage is not created in the city and towns but it is created by the people from different villages, who visit city and towns for various works.

Monserrate, who is also the Labour and Employment Minister, reiterated that the minimum wages for unskilled and skilled workers in the State will be revised. “For last six years minimum wages are not revised and now they will be increased,” he said.
