PANJIM: On humanitarian grounds, the State Cabinet on Monday decided to recommend to Governor Dr Mridula Sinha the pardon and release of three aged prisoners, who are ailing and have served the maximum of their life sentence.
The three prisoners – 91-year old Gurudas Naik, who has served more than ten years, Mario Jose D’Silva, a 73-year-old ailing prisoner and Shivaya Parihar, a 64-year-old-blind man – are all currently in the Correction Facility at Colvale.
“Governor had requested me to consider the cases of genuine prisoners who are aged and ailing behind bars and who have already served the maximum term of their life sentence,” Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told media persons after the cabinet meeting. “Accordingly we have decided to recommend three names to the Governor to pardon,” Parrikar said.
The Cabinet also accorded its approval for appointment of Dr Anupama Borker as Oncology consultant at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC). “Just like how we have a cardiac unit in GMC, we are working to have a cancer unit at the hospital,” Parrikar stated. “In a bid to have a recognised start, we have appointed Dr Borker as consultant,” he added.
