PANJIM: Warning of a possible heat wave like condition in the months of April and May, the State government has issued an advisory to residents to take precautions from soaring temperatures.

“The extreme hot weather conditions will see maximum temperature above the normal maximum temperature and minimum temperature above the normal minimum temperature,” the government said in a statement.

It has asked residents of Goa to adhere to precautions from the heat wave.

Citizens have been asked to switch to light food habits and drink adequate water during these hottest months. Seasonal fruits and vegetables help to keep one cool and hydrated, it said.

“To prevent heat stroke one can have onion salad, raw mango with cumin, drink fluids with electrolytes like coconut water, lemon juice, and butter milk and aam panna. One needs to avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, soft drinks, oily, spicy and excessive salt food. Non-vegetarians can eat slightly grilled chicken or fish rather than red meat,” it said.

When contacted, IMD scientist Rahul Menon said that usually in Goa, the highest temperatures are experienced in the months of April and May. “It has been seen in the past that inland areas of Goa experience around two degree Celcius of temperature on some hot days, higher than the coastal region,” he explained.

He said that the maximum temperature is likely to remain 2-3 degree higher than normal that is around 35 degree Celsius in the State.

Menon said that hence it is recommended to take precautions to avoid dehydration during the peak summer months.
