VASCO/MAPUSA: The “killer” roads in the State continue to claim lives as on Monday three two-wheeler riders died in separate accidents reported in the last 24 hours which also left two others injured.

Santosh Naik, 35, a resident of Adpai, Ponda died after his two-wheeler collided against an oncoming bus at Quelossim, near Cortalim in the afternoon. The accident occurred when Naik was returning home while the bus was proceeding towards Cortalim. The deceased was working as the attendant in the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim.

On receiving the information, the Verna Police rushed to the spot and conducted the panchanama. Head Constable Babaji Matkar is conducting further investigations under the guidance of Verna PI Diago Gracias.

In another accident, the Mapusa Police said a 56-year-old man from Oxel-Siolim died after colliding against another two-wheeler at Dattawadi, Mapusa around noon.

The police identified the victim as Darshan Simepuruskar. The accident occurred near St Xavier’s College, Mapusa. The rider of the other vehicle, a 23-year-old youth from Kerala sustained grievous injuries and has been admitted to the GMC, Bambolim.

However, there was a delay in administering the first aid to both the riders as

people present at the site were more interested in clicking pictures and shooting videos rather than helping the injured persons and taking them to the nearby hospital. Both the injured were lying on the road for nearly 25 minutes.

This incident also showed the “irresponsible” behaviour on part of the police and health services, who failed to reach on time. However, a good Samaritan took one of the injured to the hospital in his vehicle. But he succumbed to his injuries.

On Sunday night, Vijay Gaonkar, 48 from Sawantwadi-Maharashtra was killed after his electric two-wheeler was knocked by a truck on the national highway at Nhaibag, Pernem. Gaonkar was an ex-serviceman and was running an electric two-wheeler showroom at Sawantwadi.

The Pernem Police conducted the panchanama and registered a case against truck driver Deepak Dubey, a native of Uttar Pradesh for rash and negligent driving.

Meanwhile, a two-wheeler rider was seriously injured after his vehicle collided against a container truck at Usgao.

The accident took place near the MRF factory. The rider identified as Ghanashyam Kukalekar, 39 of Taleigao was injured after his two-wheeler got trapped under the rear wheels of the truck.

Kukalekar was immediately rushed to the GMC, Bambolim for treatment.

As per information, the condition of the rider is stable. Locals have demanded closure of U-turn near MRF factory as well as illegal roadside parking since it was reducing the motorable space and causing accidents. In the past fatal accidents have been reported at the spot, the locals have been demanding a crackdown on illegal parking.
