MARGAO: The Goa State Pollution Control Board has directed all steel units in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, besides Nicomet to install equipment to reduce smoke and emissions.
After a meeting with the representatives of the units, GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that directions were issued to make the entire estate green by planting variety of trees in and around their premises. “The steel units have said that they have called a party to install a facility to reduce smoke at one steel unit on a trial basis. They have promised to replicate the model at all other units if it is found successful,” he said, adding that the first meeting for installation of this equipment will be held at the industrial estate next week. The process of installing the equipment will take two months.
The units were also told that the government has given approval for use of slag presently stored at their premises for road embankments around Goa. A total of nine lakh tons of slag is lying at the industrial estates at Kundaim, Cuncolim, Sanguem and Pernem.
The next meeting of steel units and Nicomet to be chaired by GSPCB Chairman to follow up on decisions taken today has been convened at Cuncolim in the last week of October 2013
