Steps initiated to cut milk shortage

Goa faces a shortage of 200 lakh litres of milk per day & various schemes and incentives have been initiated to lure youth into this business, with the twin objectives of reducing unemployment and at the same time increasing milk production

VALPOI: Goa faces a shortage of 200 lakh litres of milk per day, according to Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Minister Mauvin Godinho, who said the State produces only 150 lakh litres milk per day, while the demand was for 350 lakhs litres per day.
Mauvin disclosed this after visiting Kopardem Dairy Farm, Valpoi and reiterated that the government would have to give one unit to unemployed youth, to attract them in the milk business and subsequently to increase milk production in the State.
“The government will give ten cows to unemployed youth, 90 per cent subsidy for animal shade, which was earlier at 75 per cent, besides increasing their incentives,” Mauvin said.
He also said for people who do not have land, government will introduce a new concept called Animal Hostels, where the government will construct the shed and through panchayat level, would select 10 unemployed youth and provide them the shed.
The government will initially start this concept in Sattari taluka and will provide one shed at Kopardem dairy farm. Through this scheme unemployed youth will earn Rs 30,000 per month, he said, adding, if the concept was successful the government would introduce it in others talukas, depending on demand.
“This is a good business for unemployed youth, who will also contribute to the Goan economy. Within two years, we will meet the shortage,” he emphasised.
