NEW DELHI: The government announced steps to combat crimes against women.
National Crime Record Bureau asked to put details of criminals convicted of crimes against women on its website
Countrywide 3-digit number will be issued by this month-end
A special dedicated helpline with number 181 will be operationalised across the country
Campaigns on gender equality in schools and colleges and gender modules will be integrated in the curriculum
Some of the other steps taken up on urgent basis are:
— Registration of FIR of crimes against women in any police station irrespective of jurisdiction and then its transfer to the concerned police station for investigation;
— No harassment to persons coming forward to help women in distress, without being subjected to any interrogation or being forced to become witnesses;
— Recruitment of more women in police with central incentives under a scheme to be prepared by the Home Ministry within four weeks;
— Gender sensitisation of police personnel by recording it in their annual performance appraisal report as well as in the report of inspection of police stations by senior officers and checking whether women are discouraged to lodge complaints;
— Strict action against police personnel displaying bias against women or neglecting supervisory responsibilities;
— Review of the Motor Vehicle regulations and new standards on permissible limit of factory-fitted tinted glasses, ensuring need of passenger comfort and visibility for security purposes;
— 100 per cent verification, along with biometrics, of drivers and other crew members of public transport vehicles in a time-bound manner to be decided by the Home Ministry and thereafter no staff on such buses will be allowed without having the verification certificate and identity permit, with onus on the bus owners;
— Permits cancelled in case of vehicles involved in repeat offences, increase of fines for violating permit conditions and no compounding of offences beyond a certain number; and
— Delhi government to issue notification within a month on revising the permit for public transport vehicles and the Road Transport Ministry to forward the notification to the states to emulate.
