Stolen gold recovered from accused in Maharashtra

Calangute: Gold worth Rs 2.9 lakh which had been stolen from a Saligao resident recently was recovered by police from the native place of the accused in Maharashtra. 

Saligao police had arrested Kudal native Prajakta Khanvekar, 22, for allegedly committing theft of gold ornaments from the residence of Nishita Naik at Salmona, Saligao when she had stayed there as a guest.

The ornaments included a mangalsutra weighing 37 grams, a chain with lockets weighing 26 grams, five bangles weighing 40 grams, earrings, rings and other items, all worth Rs 2,90,000.

Following a complaint lodged by Nishita Naik, an offence under section 380IPC was registered and after intensive investigations, the suspect, a native of Kudal, Maharashtra, had been  arrested on April 7, and a mangalsutra was recovered from her possession.   

Subsequently, after Khanvekar was remanded in police custody for further investigations, police recovered all the stolen jewellery. 

The suspect had gone to her native place in Kudal after the theft and kept some of the jewellery at her home, and sold some of the ornaments to a goldsmith, Saligao police said.
