MARGAO: Benaulim witnessed uproar on Saturday after stolen items from a house under construction were allegedly found in a scrap yard at Tolleabandh, with the villagers demanding immediate closure of the scrap yard.
Even as the Colva police initiated investigations into the incident, Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva told the media that he would move the district Collector to close down the scrap yard in the village. Taking exception to the presence of illegal scrap yards in the village, Caitu wondered how the scrap yards were allowed to operate in the village.
Former Benaulim sarpanch Carmelina Fernandes said that the Panchayat had never supported the regularisation of the scrap yard. She blamed the district authorities for giving relief to the scrap yard.
The victim Nixon Noronha told the media that unknown culprits had been regularly lifting steel and other items from his house under construction in recent times. “Today, I tried to trace the missing items, only to find the items in the scrap yard”, he said.
, while demanding the closure of the scrap yard. Around half-a-dozen LPG cylinders were also found inside the scrap yard.
The Colva police are investigating.
