MARGAO: The villagers of Sao Jose De Areal have urged the government to intervene and to stop the polluting methods of running the Goa Carbon Pvt Ltd at Sao Jose De Areal.
A ‘Silent Peaceful Prayer and Introspection’ to demand ‘Freedom from Carbon Dust Pollution’ will be held on August 15 near the Sao Jose de Areal Panchayat after the flag hoisting ceremony.
The villagers under the banner of ‘Social Justice Forum’ have decided to take up the matter of the carbon dust pollution in village and pursue it at all democratic levels.
Sao Jose De Areal villager Alcina Fernandes said, “Sao Jose De Areal is affected for the last 40 years by the carbon dust pollution emitted from the Goa Carbon Factory located in the village and is run by the Dempo group of companies. All these years we have been suffering silently.”
“We even had meetings with the Factory management, Chairman, worker’s unions, panchayat, ex-MLA and have discussed the matter at the gram sabha several times but no positive action is visible to control the carbon pollution by the officials,” she added. .
