Stop giving NOCs to bars: Mayem women

BICHOLIM: The women who attended the Mayem gram sabha on Sunday made a firm demand that no more permission be given for opening bars in the village and that action be taken against the illegal ones.
The women made the demand in response to some locals who requested issuance of ‘no objection certificate’ (NOC) for opening new liquor outlets in the village.
Addressing the concerns of the women, Sarpanch Kunda Mandrekar said that those who want to open new bars should complete all the legal formalities before applying for NOC from the panchayat. “Without completing the legal formalities, no NOC will be given,” she said.
However, former sarpanch Subhash Kinalkar stated that the panchayat cannot deny NOCs to bars if all the legal formalities are in place.
At this, the women firmly demanded that panchayat should stop giving licences to new bars as there are already many bars in the village. “There are many bars in the village and they are ruining the lives of the people and the family as a whole. Panchayat should not give any more licence for opening new bars,” the women said.
Meanwhile, a resolution in support of voting through ballot papers by replacing EVM was also taken at the meeting. The residents also demanded that Bal Bhavan should be started in the village as the children have to go to Bicholim which, they said, was waste of time and money. They suggested that Bal Bhavan could be started in an already closed down school at Kumbharwada.
The issue of construction of illegal houses in Mayem also came up for discussion. Demands were also made for replacing the old water pipelines from Mayem to Poira. Several other issues including taking information about people living in rented premises, gutters and cleanliness were also discussed during the meeting.
