BICHOLIM: Stating that it is the duty of elected representatives and government officials to monitor illegal constructions coming up on government land, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Thursday directed the officials to stop all such illegal constructions with immediate effect.

He was speaking at a meeting convened to discuss the development of Sanquelim municipal areas in the presence of SMC chairman Yeshwant Madkar and officials of the government departments.

“There is a need to protect government land by elected representatives and government officials. The PWD officials should immediately complain if they come across any illegal construction in their jurisdiction so that it can be demolished,” Dr Sawant said.

He said some people have the habit of encroaching upon government land and strict action should be taken against them. “For overall development and to increase the State’s GDP, the government officials have a pivotal role to play. They can decrease the unwanted expenditure which in turn would lead to increase in the GDP,” he added.

“There is a need to have a ‘vision document’ for the overall development and all the higher officials of the departments should try to look into it,” the CM said.

On the development of the Sanquelim municipal area, Dr Sawant informed that the master plan of the town is ready and it is with the GSIDC.

“Discussion on 50 per cent important topics has already been held and the rest will be taken up soon. The SMC should also follow up the topics and take some steps so that all the works can be completed,” he added.

During the meeting several issues related to SMC such as electricity, sewage treatment plant, parking, Sanquelim market, roads, relocation of the shop owners to new premises, etc, were discussed.
