MARGAO: Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) on Thursday held a token demonstration in front of the comunidade building demanding that instruction in English at primary school level be stopped.
It demanded that more schools be started in regional languages.
BBSM member Subhash Velingkar recalled that Goa’s first chief minister Dayanand Bandodkar had taken as top priority the promotion of regional languages and that is the reason why he started hundreds of primary schools in Marathi.
He said the present BJP government is systematically closing down the primary schools in regional languages and promoting education in English medium at the primary school level.
He demanded that this denationalisation be stopped immediately.
Stating that officially it is claimed that around 250 primary schools in regional languages have closed down since 2013 under the BJP regime, he said the actual closure of schools is around 450 as many are camouflaged as amalgamated schools.
He demanded that government grants to primary schools in English medium be stopped immediately and called upon the government to launch more primary schools in regional languages.
