Stray cattle have cast a bad light on Pernem beaches, regret locals

PERNEM: Cattle and street dog menace continues at the beaches of Pernem, especially at the Morjim and Arambol beach. Few panchayats, such as Morjim don’t have cattle pounds, and resolutions for impounding are passed but no action were taken and their straying cast a pall on the mood of the tourists and locals, regrets a resident of Arambol.

“Many times this issue has been raised in the village gram sabha and representations via letters have been made to the concerned authorities seeking help but all their efforts fall on deaf ears.

Another local Ashik Gad said, “Since these animals are left free, they loiter around in the village as well as on the beaches. Since Morjim is a peaceful beach, many tourists prefers to spend more time there but they are stopped at the entrance by the,”

Sources reveled that these cattle are abandoned by the locals as they are no longer into agriculture and find no use of these animals.

Every household, a source said, will have at least one animal loitering around freely and this number is always on the rise.

The abandoned cattle and stray dogs are constantly in search of food and follow the visitors who would feed them only to get rid of them, say villagers from Morjim.

“Panchayats should keep a check on the beaches every day and every panchayat should deploy staff to drive the cattle away from the beach. Not only the panchayat but also the locals who are daily visitors should take the initiative and drive these stray animals from the beaches,” suggested another local from Arambol.
