PERNEM: Bodies of two more monkeys were found in the last two days. With this, the number of bodies (monkeys) recovered stands at 12 in the last 17 days.
Two bodies were found on Saturday and Sunday morning in Torxem villlage. On Sunday morning, a stray dog carried a decomposed part of the body to a residential area of Torxem and abandoned it at the Government Primary School. This stirred the area. It has left the residents worrying whether monkey fever has struck the area. They were also wary about sending their children to the school as the remains of the carcass was found in the school premises.
Sources said, stray dogs feast on these bodies usually after sunset and leave portions of the carcass at residential areas thus sparking tension in the area.
Despite such recurrence, the authorities have not done anything to tackle the situation or find out the reason of monkey deaths to resolve the tense situation in the area. Meanwhile, the village Panchayat members and locals brought out a rally which culminated at Casarwdnem Health Center on Monday morning.
ZP member Ramesh Sawal said, “The purpose of the rally was fulfilled since the doctors and concerned authorities took instant action to solve the problem. The doctor from Casarwadnem Health Center and another physician, Dr Utkarsh Bethodkar, visited the spot and tested the water bodies and the wells. The doctors also made the people aware of the disease and its prevention.
They also checked a few ailing students. The doctors have also instructed an attendant from Primary Health Center Torxem to visit the village and keep tab on a daily basis. Doctors also instructed the locals to burn the monkey carcass. Vaccination will start in the next two days, the authorities confirmed.
