MARGAO: Cuncolim farmer Vishnu Desai was on Monday rushed to Hospicio following complaints of abdominal pain and giddiness.
His family members, however, will continue their 14-day hunger strike till they receive a written communication from the Director of Municipal Administration that the government will maintain a status quo on the acquired land.
The condition of the farmer, who has been on a fast since December 17 in support of his demand for return of the agricultural land, showed signs of deterioration on Monday evening and was immediately rushed to the Balli Primary Health Centre from where he was shifted to Hospicio for treatment.
His son Datta told the media at the Hospicio that the family members will continue the hunger striker till they receive in writing from the DMA Elvis Gomes that the government will maintain status quo on the acquired land. “We were scheduled to call on the DMA this morning, but he told us over the phone that he is on leave and will resume duty only on January 2. Hence, we have decided to continue the fast till the DMA gives us written assurance about the status quo”, Datta said.
The government had on Friday promised to maintain status quo on the acquired land and had even announced that the DMA will drop the consultant appointed to plan the administrative complex on the acquired land. The government delegation led by Urban Development Minister, Francis D’Souza had further promised that the farmer will not be obstructed from cultivating the agricultural field.
