CURCHOREM: Traffic congestion plaguing the vicinity of Curchorem schools has reached critical levels, sparking concerns for both students and commuters. Residents of the Bebquegal ward have raised the alarm about the clogged two-way roads, often obstructed by vehicles due to inadequate parking in the Curchorem market area.
The problem is compounded as parents’ vehicles, auto-rickshaws, and school vans/ buses converge during pick-up and drop-off times.
Fr Jerry Vaz, Headmaster of Guardian Angel High School, said that the once-spacious roads had become perilous. “There are no safe roads or lanes for the students to walk or for the parents to drop their children. Even if a two-wheeler stops, the other vehicles cannot pass by,” he said, urging the police to address the ‘man-made disaster’.
Pradip Naik, Chairman of New Educational Institute, Curchorem, advocated for traffic regulations and proposed one-way traffic on major school access roads to alleviate the ordeal faced by students and commuters.
Eknath Naik, Headmaster of Sarvoday Educational Society’s High School, requested the deployment of two constables from the Curchorem traffic cell to manage the high volume of vehicles.
Sister Sarika, Headmistress of Perpetual Succour Convent High School suggested implementing one-way traffic during school hours and expanding infrastructure near the school premises to ease congestion.
A concerned parent pointed to the market area’s inadequate parking as a major contributing factor and called for permanent parking facilities nearby to effectively resolve the issue.
Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC)
Chairperson Pradip Naik disclosed the approval of a one-way road proposal near Guardian Angel School, and welcomed similar proposals from other schools.
Curchorem Traffic Cell PI Vijaynath Kavlekar assured temporary measures to prevent school-hour traffic jams and urged compliance with traffic and parking rules.
