MARGAO: Activism to save the Mhadei river has now reached the student community. Environmentalist Prof Elsa Fernandes conducted an interactive session about the diversion of the Mhadei waters for the students of Perpetual Succour Convent High School at Navelim on Tuesday, in an event organised by NGO ‘Goyche Fudle Pilge Khatir’ in collaboration with the school management.
Fernandes spoke to the students at length about the rivers of Goa, reinforcing their knowledge about water, its sources, its availability, its services, its impact on human health, livelihood, pollution, management, biodiversity, and micro-climate in the context of climate change. “It is our constitutional duty to safeguard our natural environment and its resources for the future, so that the future students also get to experience nature in all its beauty and bounty,” said Fernandes. She urged the students to keep themselves abreast on various interesting topics surrounding rivers and water resources, and explained why rivers and land need the attention of the people for sustainable development.
Fernandes also spoke about the scope of further studies in professions related to the environment.
The students were invested in the topic due to the current issue of the Mhadei diversion which will have an impact on three different States of the country.
