MARGAO: Alerted villagers of Zorivaddo, Davorlim on Monday exposed the substandard drain construction work wherein some powdered material was used instead of sand. Left with no option, the concerned contractor stopped the work.
The incident came to light at around 4 pm near the Our Lady of Rosary Chapel, Zorivaddo-Davorlim. The villagers accused the panch of being aggressive towards the public instead of supporting them.
The concerned contractor had commenced the drain construction work tendered by the PWD at the above site. However, alert villagers noticed some powdered material at the site which was used for constructing the drain instead of sand.
“Upon inquiry with the concerned PWD engineer we have been told that the contractor was supposed to use sand and not powdered material. The use of sand is also mentioned in the tender. However, it was noticed the construction was carried out by using low quality powdered material”, complained Menino Colaso, a villager.
He said they are not against the construction of drains but at the same time they are opposed to substandard work.
“It is public money which is being used for the works. We cannot tolerate such works, which will lead to the waste of public money”, he said.
Menino said the panch was aggressive towards the residents for objecting to the ongoing construction works.
“Actually, the panch should have supported the villagers in pointing out to the low quality works. We condemned the behaviour of the panch “, Menino added.
