MARGAO: There was a sudden increase in the roadside vendors in Margao on Friday with mostly migrants selling vegetables, fruits, biscuits and some even fish at different junctions and along the Margao-Navelim road; and they made quick business.
Gandhi Market where fruits and vegetables are generally sold in large quantities was open from 4 am to 7 am. This led the people to buy such items from the roadside vendors. The New Market was open for people who had to enter through only one gate.
At SGPDA market that remained closed on Friday also, fruit and vegetable vendors converted the parking place into an open market and were seen doing brisk business even though traffic movement there was chaotic.
Though all the retail markets at SGPDA remained closed, some people were seen selling fish on the road next to the market. The fish sold here was very exorbitant as mackerels were sold at the rate of Rs 500 for 10 and prawns for Rs 600 a kg.
However, at Navelim where former minister Avertano Furtdao had arranged fish for sale; the prices were Rs 200 per kg of mackerels where one could get 7 mackerels per kg, prawns were sold for Rs 350 per kg.
Even though Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has asked people not to consume chicken due to fear of bird flu, two shops at SGPDA market briskly sold chicken to people who rushed to purchase it.
Once again traffic movement was quite steady in Margao and police disclosed that they have not been given any instructions to stop vehicular movement.
