PORVORIM: PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar on Saturday expressed confidence that Goa would get uninterrupted water supply round the clock by March 2015.
“The government has undertaken several projects for the augmentation of water supply and to provide uninterrupted water supply for 24 hours in the State and these projects will be completed by March 2015,” said Dhavalikar, while addressing media persons at Porvorim,
“The Public Works Department has completed 60 per cent work of JAICA project and the balance work will be completed by March 2015. The JAICA project for Rs 1100 crore was sanctioned in 2006, but its implementation started only in 2010.”
Stating that there are around 2.5 lakh water connections in Goa, Dhavalikar estimated that the water requirement for a population of 14 lakh works out to 210 MLD, considering the usage of 150 litres of water per person per day.
“Taking into account the consumption of around 150 MLD water by industries and other establishments, the total requirement works out to 360 MLD of water and as against this requirement, Goa presently produces 469 MLD of water. Considering a 20 per cent leakage, there is surplus water in the State,” the minister said.
