MARCEL, DEC 7
Transport Minister Sudin Dhavlikar has stated that students will suffer due to the newly introduced grading system, which is implemented for the students of Std 10 and 12 from this year.
Dhavlikar was addressing during the cultural mela organized by Ponda schools Association (PSA) in association with Department of Art and Culture at Ramnathi-Ponda.
“The grading system is not properly done and many students are bound to get affected because of it. I am not against the grading system, but many questions pertaining to this system are unanswered,” he said.
“Teachers, parents and students have to be well-informed about the system and it should be discussed,” added Dhavlikar.
“I have been discussing this with teachers, parents and even the secretaries in the State government. There are many unanswered questions and if not resolved, then I am sure students are going to suffer,” said the transport minister.
“I am not against the grading system, but it should have been done properly. Students, parents and teachers ought to know the grading system thoroughly and the department should have focused on it,” he said.
“There are many issues pertaining to the grading system introduced by the Goa Board and I feel students will suffer because of this. Something has to be done and I hope teachers, who are aware of problems with the grading system, will rightly communicate to the Goa Board,” he added.
A teacher on condition of anonymity told Herald that students, especially brilliant students, are going to suffer and the new grading system, which has been implemented from this year, is disadvantageous to students.
In support of their claim, the teacher said under the grading system, if students do not have satisfactory performance in one of the exams, then it will affect their results.
“All the exams are important as against earlier when students only used to concentrate on the final board exam,” added the teacher.
About 72 schools participated in the annual event organized by PSA, which has about 98 member schools from across the State.
Principal of Government College Khandola and former Goa University Registrar Mohan Sangodkar said every child has to have some special qualities, however with importance given to bookish knowledge, identifying specialties in a child has gone astray. He said importance should also be given on identifying hidden talent in students.
“Today, the focus in education system has gone on memorizing, the better you memorize, better are the exam results. But focus is not on identification of the specialties of the child. Every individual, I feel is unique and has to have something special in them,” said Sangodkar.
“There cannot be any individual who is useless. It has to be identified, but we are unable to identify that hidden talent,” added Sangodkar.
