PONDA: The government has proposed infrastructure development works of around Rs 10,000 crore, which includes providing clean water, widening national highways and bridges into four and six lanes, in the next three years. This was informed by PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, who also announced the construction of sewage treatment plants for Ponda. The foundation stone for the same will be laid on February 5.
Dhavalikar was speaking after offering floral tributes and hoisting the Tricolour at the 67th Republic Day function at the Kranti Maidan, Ponda.
He stated that the sewerage treatment plants (STP) would cost Rs 400 crore and cater to the areas under the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) and the villages of Curti, Kavlem and Bandora. The work will be undertaken in three phases: in the first phase, an STP with a capacity of 25 MLD and costing around Rs 90 crore will be set up for Curti; in the second phase, an STP costing around Rs 130 crore will be set up for Ponda and Kavlem; in the third phase, an STP costing Rs 200 crore will be set up for Bandora and the rest of Ponda.
Dhavalikar further said that the long-pending Rajiv Gandhi Kala Mandir renovation work will be completed soon and will be opened to the public by February 28, while the Kranti Maidan renovation work, which has been delayed due to technical reasons, will be opened to public at the end of May. He added that freedom fighters will be provided offices at the Kranti Maidan premises.
He urged them to never forget the atrocities committed during the British rule as well as the freedom fighters who struggled and laid down their lives to free India.
Students also sang songs on national integration, while cultural programmes were held to commemorate Republic Day.
