PONDA: In a relief to the villagers at Bond-Baag who are opposing Ponda Municipal Council’s plan to set up a garbage treatment plant, PWD and Transport Minister Sudin Dhavlikar on Tuesday assured that the area will be used only for plastic waste segregation.
It may be recalled that a few days back, residents from the area had blocked a PMC truck carrying plastic waste at Bond-Baag, which is an old abandoned garbage disposal site of the PMC in Bethora Panchayat and located on the village and PMC boundary.
Residents from Bond-Baag and even a councillor had opposed PMC’s move to reuse the site to set up organic waste converters to treat wet garbage.
“The area at Bond-Baag will be used only for plastic waste segregation and wet garbage will not be treated there. We have separate place for installing organic waste converters to treat wet garbage and there no need for the people to panic,” Dhavlikar told reporters after a meeting convened to discuss traffic management plan.
“We have appointed a consultant for Ponda city traffic management plan and the work will start by December. NGOs including people will be taken into confidence before going ahead with the traffic management plan,” he said.
According to information, the first phase of the traffic management plan costing about Rs 55 crore will be taken up tentatively on December 19.
Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar, PMC Chairperson Dr Radhika Naik, councillors, DySP Dinraj Govenkar, PI CL Patil and Traffic PI Nilesh Dhaigodkar were also present for the meeting.
