PONDA: The sugarcane crushing season at the government-run Sanjeevani Sahakari Sugar Factory at Dayanandnagar, Dharbandora, was kicked off on Tuesday by Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar and Savordem MLA Deepak Pauskar by placing some sugarcane in the machine.
Around 1.5 lakh tonne of sugarcane is set as target to be crushed this season out of which 1 lakh will be procured from neighbouring Karnataka while around 50,000 tonnes of sugarcane will be supplied by around 1200 local farmers.
Although the Sanjeevani Factory has been facing losses for several years, both the MLAs stressed the need for its continuance as a large number of sugarcane growers and their families were dependent on it.
