PANJIM: With solid waste management being a major issue in the State, the local organisations have resolved to set up waste management support groups in every municipality to tackle the growing problem across the State.
A day long workshop on Waste Management organised by the Directorate of Municipal Administration and attended by civil society groups, also decided to hold district level workshops.
“The holding of two district level workshops and the setting up of a WMSG in every municipal council to promote separation at source, home composting and growing organic kitchen gardens has been decided,” GOACAN Convener Roland Martins said.
The attendees also discussed on how people dump garbage at open places instead of segregating the dry and wet waste for collection by the municipalities. Regular house to house collection of garbage and awareness among the people was suggested by the groups, working in the field.
As per a report with the Goa Waste Management Corporation, Goa generates 766 tonnes of waste per day. It has been projected that the State will generate 888 tonnes waste per day by 2025, 992 tonnes per day by 2030 and 1,108 tonnes per day by 2035.
