MARGAO: Stating that Jetty Policy 2022 will spell a disaster for the State just like the Major Ports Act, Leader of Opposition (LoP) Yuri Alemao appealed to the Goans to support the NGOs, social activists and environmentalists fighting to save Goa.

He reminded that it was the Congress party which said “No” to the nationalization of rivers in Goa. But, the BJP Govt said “Yes” to it.

Alemao said, “The insult of the RND Minister is a reflection of the Major Port Act of the BJP Govt. The draft Jetty Policy too is a step towards a disaster.”

The LoP was reacting to the statement made by the River Navigation Minister Subhash Phal Desai, wherein the minister had claimed that he was not taken into confidence by the Mormugao Port Authority and New Mangalore Port Authority regarding the inauguration of the Solar Boat despite being built by Goa Government at a cost of Rs. 3.97 crore.

He said the act of the ports authorities makes it loud and clear that Goa Govt has lost complete control on the rivers of Goa and the land coming under the jurisdiction of Port Authorities.

“It is the BJP Govt in 2015, headed by then chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar which overruled the denial of the then Congress Govt in 2011 headed by then chief minister Digambar Kamat to nationalise the rivers in Goa. The BJP Govt at the Centre imposed the Major Port Act on Goa against the strong opposition of the people. The results of both these anti-Goa decisions are now visible,” pointed out Yuri.
