PANJIM: Panjim Mayor Surendra Furtado will face BJP’s Rupesh Halarnakar as he attempts to get re-elected to the top post at the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP).
On Tuesday, Furtado who belongs to the Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate camp filed his nomination for the Mayor’s post, while Halarnakar filed the nomination on behalf of the BJP camp.
Deputy Mayor Lata Parekh will retain her position as no one filed a nomination opposing her for the post.
The elections to the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor have been scheduled for Wednesday, by the CCP Commissioner Dipak Desai.
Though, Halarnakar has filed the nomination, Furtado’s win is inevitable given that Monserrate’s camp has 16 councillors in the 30-member corporation.
As per the rules of the Corporation, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are to be elected for a period of one year, leading to elections for the two posts annually.
