Surgical goods worth Rs 15 lakh gutted in Porvorim fire

PORVORIM: Surgical goods worth Rs 15 lakh were gutted in a fire at a shop in Alto-Porvorim on Wednesday. The Mapusa Fire Services received a call at about 2.45 pm stating that smoke was billowing from a shop at Skyreach Court building.

PORVORIM: Surgical goods worth Rs 15 lakh were gutted in a fire at a shop in Alto-Porvorim on Wednesday.
The Mapusa Fire Services received a call at about 2.45 pm stating that smoke was billowing from a shop at Skyreach Court building. The fire services rushed to the site with three fire tenders and extinguished the fire within three hours.
The ground floor of the shop was being used as a godown to store surgical goods, while tuition classes were being conducted on the mezzanine floor.
The shop owner, Shivaji Gawas, said he had closed his shop at 2.30 pm and had gone for lunch.
“Within 15 minutes, I received a call that there was smoke from my shop. I then rushed to the shop and alerted the Mapusa Fire station. The loss to my goods is estimated at Rs 15 lakh,” said Gawas.
Fire officials have suspected that a short circuit had cause the fire. Assistant Divisional Officer North Rajendra Haldanker, Sr Fire Station Officer D D Redkar and Asst Fire Officer Subhash Shirodker supervised the fire fighting operations.
