MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) through its Swayampurna Mitras organised a two-and-a-half-hour presentation on various government schemes for the benefit of the public on Saturday.
Officials from the Tribal Welfare Department, Social Welfare Department and Women and Child Development Department were also present and they spoke about the schemes of their respective departments to the public.
The programme, which was held in the MMC hall, witnessed wide participation as members of the public had various questions to ask the officials and Swayampurna Mitras about the kind of documentation they require to apply for the schemes, the eligibility criteria, what they stand to gain etc.
Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, MMC Chief Officer Rohit Kadam added that the initiative was a successful one and that from now on, there will be such presentations by five Swayampurna Mitras, every Saturday from 10 am to 12 am in the MMC hall.
He appealed to the public to come forward and attend these meetings as ultimately the schemes are meant to benefit the public itself.
The officials from the State governments who were present added that such programmes will help them create mass awareness about the schemes and that there is a need to bridge the knowledge gap about the schemes that can help the public. It was also observed that many members of the public are not aware of these schemes.
It may be recalled the State government had launched this drive to make Goa Swayampurna (self-sufficient) in which Swayampurna Mitras, government officers were nominated for every panchayat and municipality and they dedicatedly attend to the people of its jurisdiction to inspire them to take benefits of various government schemes and facilities which will help them to be ‘swayampurna’.
