SWINDON: Thirty-seven-year-old Imtiyaz Shaikh, who contested as the Labour Candidate, emerged victorious in the 2018 local elections from the Eastcott constituency that were held on May 3. He received 1621 votes in comparison to Tony Robson, his nearest rival from the Liberal Democrats, who received 1344 votes. Shaikh is proud of his Goan roots and his supporters.
This Southwest town in England, is currently home to 20,000 Goans who have gained permanent settlement status. Born in Vasco, Imtiyaz is the first councillor of Goan origin in Swindon.
Imtiyaz grew up and lived in Goa until 2005. He studied at St Joseph’s Institute, Vasco, and later worked at Western Union Shipyard Ltd. He also ran the ICJ dance school with two friends and helped out with his family business.
“I came to London in 2005 with a dream of making something out of my life, with the opportunities the country offered. My experiences during the last 13 years have been nothing but positive, living in a country that embodies unity through diversity. It’s something I feel we can all apply in our day to day life,” said Shaikh
