Take action on footpath vendors: Margao traders to MMC

MARGAO: The New Market Traders Association on Tuesday demanded action against the vendors selling goods on the footpaths of Margao town. They also urged to grant them permission to keep their shops open till 8 pm.

Vinod Shirodkar, president of New Market Traders Association along with few other traders met Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Lyndon Pereira and Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes to demand the same.

They expressed frustration for no action from the MMC against the vendors doing business on the footpaths.

Speaking to the media persons, Shirodkar said, “The shopkeepers are suffering because of COVID-19 pandemic. “Neither the municipality nor the government has offered any help to the traders, despite paying rent and taxes on time. We are passing through financial crises,” he stated.

Further, he complained that many illegal vendors are seen selling the goods and other material which are already available in the market, which is causing losses to the traders inside the market.

“We demand that the MMC needs to take quick action against all those vendors selling goods on the footpaths and surrounding areas of a new market,” he urged.

He said that they should be allowed to operate till 8 pm in the evening, as the Ganesh Chaturthi is fast approaching.

Reacting to the demands, the chairperson said that the MMC has asked the concerned market inspectors to initiate action against all the illegal vendors selling goods on the footpaths.
