MARGAO: Additional District and Session Judge South Goa Vincent Silva on Saturday sentenced 22-year-old youth Vijeyendra known as Chetan Arondekar, to undergo life imprisonment for committing a murder of 20-year-old girl Deepali Mehta, at Cabo de Rama.
As per the orders of court, the accused is sentenced under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code to undergo imprisonment for life and fine of Rs 50,000 and in default to undergo simple imprisonment of two years. The fine amount of Rs 50,000 shall be paid to the mother of deceased.
“The period of detention undergone by the accused during the course of investigation and trial shall be set off against substantive sentence awarded in this case,” the order further states.
As per the chargesheet, accused Chetan allegedly strangulated to death Deepali at Cabo de Rama. Cuncolim Police, who conducted the investigations, later arrested him. The court examined 32 witnesses in support of the case.
According to the police, the victim and accused hail from Talpona village, Canacona and were neighbours.
The police said that the mother of victim girl had lodged a complaint at Canacona Police Station stating that her daughter had gone missing. The police had detained the accused boy on suspicion since he was known to the girl, who was pursuing college education with her.
The investigation carried out by Cuncolim Police had revealed that the boy and girl had come to Cabo de Rama on a motorcycle. Following a verbal duel between them, the accused allegedly strangulated the girl to death.
The Cuncolim Police were entrusted with the investigations of case since the victim’s body was found at Cabo de Rama, in the jurisdiction of Cuncolim Police Station. Public Prosecutor D M Korgaoker represented State.
