PANJIM: Goa’s locally grown Red Amaranth, popularly known as tambdi bhaji, is set to become the State vegetable soon.
Sources in the Agriculture Department said that the proposal towards naming Red Amaranth as the State vegetable is under process.
Agriculture Director Ulhas Pai Kakode said, “We can become self sufficient any moment (in tambdi bhahji) as it can be cultivated on a large scale. Even our Minister on various forums has declared that tambdi bhaji would be presented as a Goan brand and tambdi bhaji would be declared as a State vegetable.”
He further said that the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has researched and come up with a better seed of Red Amaranth and the Goa state committee has recognised it as Goa1.
“We need to give it a nomenclature instead of terming it as Goa-1 and Goa-2. We need to brand it and popularise and through value addition what we can do will be done,” he added.
Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardesai has been vocal about creating Brand Goa.
