PANJIM: In a proactive move, Merces sarpanch Pramod Kamat along with panchayat member and villagers caught a tanker illegally releasing sewage into the fields on Tuesday night.
Following complaints that some tankers were releasing sewage into the fields for the last few days, Kamat along with panchayat member Jayesh Vengurlekar and villagers kept a vigil on the movement of tankers in the village during night hours and caught a tanker while emptying sewage into the fields on Tuesday late night.
The villagers said that due to release of sewage for the last fortnight, there is fear of soil getting contaminated and posing health hazard to the nearby residents. They have demanded stringent action.
